12 Vehicle Crash Closes I-90 Near Sturgis For 3-1/2 Hrs Monday

An accident Monday afternoon on Interstate 90 near Sturgis involved a dozen vehicles and sent 4 drivers to the Sturgis hospital with minor injuries.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol says the incident began about 1:45 when an eastbound semi hit a snowplow and then a guardrail – triggering a chain reaction with 4 other semis, a delivery truck, 3 pickups, and 3 cars.

Charges are pending against the driver of the first semi, who was one of the 4 who suffered minor injuries.

Eastbound I-90 was closed for about 3-½ hours by the accident and cleanup, which included fuel and engine fluids that spilled from multiple vehicles.
