3 Neb Crashes Result In 7 Weekend Deaths

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – It was a deadly weekend on Nebraska highways with 3 accidents resulting in 7 deaths. Two of the crashes and 5 of the deaths were storm-related.

The non-storm accident occurred about 3:15 Sat morning in Omaha when a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed left the roadway and hit first a tree and them a retaining wall. 4 of the 5 occupants were ejected and 2 died at the scene with 2 others taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The other 2 accidents occurred within 2 hours of each other around midday Sunday. The State Patrol says an eastbound SUV on Interstate 80 between Omaha and Lincoln near Ashland lost control in slick condition, hit a small car also eastbound, went through the median and into the westbound lanes where it was hit by another SUV. A pickup then collided with the 2 SUVs.

Five members of an extended family were in the first SUV and 3 of them died.19-year old Domingo Velasquez and 15-year old Erica Rafael were pronounced dead at the scene with 10-year old Heidy Diaz passing away at an Omaha hospital. All were from Lincoln.

‘ 29-year old driver Carlos Bernebe Escobar and 28-year old front seat passenger Carmelina Pasqual Bernabe were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries with a 4-year old child taken to one hospital and then transferred to Omaha Children’s hospital in critical condition.

The two adults in the front seats were the parents of the two younger children while the older two were their niece and nephew. Troopers believe none of the 5 were wearing seat belts.

The second SUV also had 5 occupants, all from Minnesota and all taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries while the occupants of the other 2 vehicles escaped injury. All were wearing seat belts.

The final two fatalities occurred when a car and a pickup collided on Hwy 75 beneath the Hwy 34 bridge south of Bellevue. 19-year old Gabrielle Ramirez and 20-year old Beau Dasher, were passengers in the car driven by 27-year old Joshua Martinez. All were from Plattsmouth.

No information was given on injuries to Joshua Martinez or to 20-year old Christopher Peters of Council Bluff, Iowa, the driver of the pickup.
