3 Pedestrians Hit In Middle Of Rapid City Intersection; 1 Dies Of Injuries

One person was killed, 1 hospitalized with serious injuries, and 1 declined treatment after they were hit by vehicles while walking in the middle of a major Rapid City intersection about 6:15 Monday morning.

Rapid City police spokesperson Brendyn Medina says one was hit by a pickup and the other 2 by an SUV as they crossed the intersection of St Patrick Street and Mount Rushmore Road but not in the crosswalks.

Medina says a car slowed down for them, leading the pickup to swerve to the right to avoid a rear-end collision but hitting one of the pedestrians in the process. The other 2 were hit by an SUV as they walked over to their friend.

The person hit by the pickup refused treatment while the other 2 were taken to the hospital where one of them died. Names have not been released pending notification of family

Medina says the preliminary investigation turned up no evidence to suggest alcohol or drug use by the motorists, while toxicology reports are pending on the pedestrians..

The crash remains under active investigation by the Rapid City Police Department’s Critical Accident Reconstruction Team.
