36 Mountain Goats Killed Before Grand Teton NP Halts Helicopter Shooting

GRAND TETON NP, Wyo. (AP) – Grand Teton:National Park officials say sharpshooters in helicopters killed 36 mountain goats last week before a contested effort to eradicate the nonnative animals from the park was halted on the orders of Interior Secretary David Bernhardt.

Bernhardt intervened on Friday, the day the shooting began, after Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon called for the project to cease because it allowed the goat meat to go to waste.

Grand Teton officials want to kill the park’s population of 100 or so mountain goats, which compete with about 100 bighorn sheep for food and can spread disease to the native animals.
