A funeral service for Joseph (Joe) M. Freimuth, 79, of Castle Pines, Colorado will be on August 12, 2023 at Horan & McConaty Funeral Home, 5303 E County Line RD, Centennial, CO at 11am followed by a luncheon at the Funeral Home.

Joseph Michael Freimuth was born February 21, 1944 at Hendricks Field, Sebring, Florida. His parents were Dr. Frank and Freda (Miller) Freimuth. He attended schools in Crawford, Nebraska graduating with the Crawford High School Class of 1962. Joe was very active
athletically in his high school years playing football, basketball, and running track. He received the Wellington Sportsmanship Trophy for 1961. He also graduated as Salutatorian of his class.

After high school, Joe attended Chadron State College (CSC) for one semester and played with the CSC freshman basketball team. In January, 1963 Joe transferred to Creighton University to major in accounting at the College of Business Administration. He also played with the Creighton University freshman basketball team. Joe graduated at the top of his business school class from Creighton University in 1966 with a B.S.B.A., cum laude. He served as President of Beta Gamma Sigma during his senior year and was a member and officer of Beta Alpha Psi. He was inducted into the national Jesuit honor society Alpha Sigma Nu in 1965 and was selected as a Creighton senior class member to Who’s Who for his academics as well as displaying service and loyalty to the school. In 1986 he received the Alumni Merit Award for the College of Business from Creighton University.


After college, Joe received a scholarship to attend Georgetown University Law School in Washington, DC. He began his law school studies in 1966 and graduated with a J.D. in 1969. Throughout his law school career he served as a full time prefect (resident assistant) for undergraduate students on the Georgetown University main campus. After graduation from law school, Joe took and passed the Nebraska and Colorado bar exams and was admitted to practice in those states. He also took and passed the national CPA exam in 1971. In 1995 he attended the Executive Education Program of the Columbia Business School and over the years also attended Harvard Business School executive development programs.


Joe began his professional career with Peat Marwick Mitchell (PMM) in Washington D.C. in August, 1969. He was drafted shortly thereafter and joined the DC Army National Guard with a 6 year reserve commitment. He did his basic and MP training at Fort Gordon, Georgia and upon completion transferred to the Colorado National Guard in Denver, CO. At that time he also transferred to the Denver office of PMM to continue his professional career. He completed his US Army commitment in 1975 as a member of a JAG Army reserve unit in Omaha, NE.

In 1973 Joe joined the recently opened office of Touche Ross (TR) in Omaha as a member of their tax department. He was promoted to partner at TR in 1977 and thereafter became a Regional Tax Partner for several Midwest offices, transferring in 1983 to Washington DC to become National Director of Tax Operations and subsequently National Director of Tax for TR. During his time in Omaha, Joe taught Accounting for Lawyers as a Lecturer in Law at the Creighton University School of Law and he was elected and served as Treasurer of the Douglas County Republican Party. In the 1970’s Joe helped open the satellite Lincoln, NE office of TR. In 1988 he helped open and led the first Tysons Corner, VA satellite
TR office and also focused on the merger integration of Gary, Stoch, and Walls with the Richmond, VA TR office. He served during that time as the volunteer head of the Fairfax County American Heart Association. In 1989 TR merged with Deloitte (D&T) and Joe became Partner in Charge of the Philadelphia tax practice. While in Philadelphia, he also served as the Chairman of the Political Information Committee for the Pennsylvania Institute of CPAs. He concluded his professional career with D&T from 1998 to 2006 as a National Operations partner in Wilton, CT.

In 1981 Joe married Catherine Elliott in Omaha, Nebraska. They have two sons, Joe born in 1983 and Mark born in 1988, both of whom now live in Denver. Joe also has a daughter, Brenda Bor, who lives in Seattle and she and her husband, Andrew, have two children, Daniel and Fiona. Joe and Cathy moved from Omaha to McLean, VA in 1983, from McLean to Bryn Mawr, PA in 1990, and from Bryn Mawr to Wilton, CT in 1998. They continued to live in Wilton after Joe’s 2006 retirement from D&T until 2015 when they moved to their retirement home in Castle Pines, CO. Joe considered his family as his greatest achievement and proudest accomplishment in life and always, besides his Catholic faith, held family
as his highest priority. Joe is survived by his sisters, Mary Ann Dercher of Overland Park, KS and Nancy Byrne of North Platte, NE and his brothers, John of Omaha, NE, Bill of Farmington, NM, and Tom of Columbus, NE, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Rod, and sister Helen.

  1. Joe was a dear friend. Lost track of him after i joined the Navy. He never came back for class reunions. His brother never told us anything about Joe. RIP buddy.
