Sumner-Eddyville-Miller blocked a Hay Springs two point kick attempt with :44 seconds left in the game to hold on for a 21-20 win over the Hawks on Friday night in the D6 championship game at Cope Stadium at UNK.
Hay Springs trailed 8-0 at the half after S-E-M connected on a 42-yard pass from Chance Daake to Cohen Rohde, but the Hawks would strike first in the 3rd quarter on a 50-yard run from Gage Mintken.
It took one play for the Mustangs to regain the lead on a 50-yard scamper by Maddox Jones early in the 3rd but again Hay Springs responded on the legs of Mintken just 3-minutes later when he took it into the endzone from three yards out.
S-E-M scored what would end up being the game winning score on Maddox’s 2nd touchdown run of the night from 30 yards out with 4:12 left in the game.
The Hawks would drive again as Mintken would pull Hay Springs within one on a 21-yard run down the sideline before the potential game winning kick was blocked.
Mintken finished with 193 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground to lead Hay Springs who finishes as state runner-up for the 2nd time in school history.
