Alliance City Manager Choice Says No

The man picked to be the next City Manager of Alliance has changed his mind and said no.

Hood River, Oregon, County Administrator Jeff Hecksel was negotiating contract terms when he decided not to take the job.

Alliance Mayor Mike Dafney says the 60-year old Hecksel told him he liked the community and was pleased with the salary offer, but that lengthy talks with his family convinced him this was not the right time to move from Oregon to Nebraska.

Dafney did not say what the city council will do now – offer the position to the other finalist, Jim Thomas, or reopen the search process. They’ve already started over once after rejecting their first group of finalists in December.

Meanwhile, new Scottsbluff City Manager Dustin Rief began his duties this week. Rick Kuckkahn, interim city manager since Nathan Johnson resigned 14 months ago, says he’ll work with Rief to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Rief comes to Scottsbluff from Orono, Minnesota, where he had served as City Administrator since 2017.
