Alliance Man Charged With Trying To Kill Wife And Housemate On Xmas Eve

An Alliance man is accused of trying to kill his wife and their housemate on Christmas Eve because he believed they were having an affair.

49-year old Cornell Belt was arraigned last week on charges of 1st-degree arson, terroristic threats, felony child abuse, and attempted 1st-degree murder. Belt’s bond is $20,000 and he’s scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Box Butte County Court.

In court documents, police say when they responded to a domestic disturbance call at Belt’s home they were told he had started a fire at the top of the stairs leading down to the basement to prevent the housemate getting out.

Belt allegedly also tried to pull a gas stove away from the wall in an apparent attempt to break the gas line and create an explosion. His wife said she tried to stop him and he told her “I’ll (*@!#) blow you up.”

After his arest, Belt told Alliance police investigators he would have killed both the housemate and his wife said he had a gun.

Belt’s daughter was in the house at the time of the incident, but was able to run to a neighbor’s. The child abuse charge stems from her being in danger.
