Alliance Murder Suspect Makes First Appearance, No Bond Set

ALLIANCE – The Alliance man charged with a fatal stabbing last month will remain in custody without bail for the foreseeable future.

Box Butte County Judge Paul Wess did not set bond when 66-year old George W Smith made his first court appearance on charges of 2nd-degree murder and felony use of a deadly weapon on
on Tuesday by video from the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center

Judge Wess also did not set a date for a preliminary hearing, but did grant Smith’s request to appear in person for it. The Nebraska Commission on Public Advocacy was appointed to represent Smith.

Smith is accused of killing Steven Oliver the night of June 19th at an Alliance residence. Police say the two men were arguing when the dispute escalated and Smith stabbed Oliver.

The arrest warrant says that when officers arrived at the scene, Smith refused to leave and told the officers to shoot him. He was finally taken into custody after being tasered.
