Alvern Letcher was born on September 16, 1933, and passed away on October 22, 2021, at his home in Hay Springs.

His birth took place in his Uncle Leonard’s house in rural Sheridan County while the river was flooding so bad that the doctor almost didn’t make it to the house in time. He was the middle of 7 siblings born to Charley and Elsie (Peters) Letcher – Marilyn, Aldean, Gerald, Alvern, Joan, Charlyn, and Loreen.

Alvern attended Riverview Elementary School and Hay Springs High School. After graduating in 1951. he entered the Army and served in the Triple Nickle Artillery Battalion for two years while serving in Korea. After returning from the service he started farming on Mirage Flats and continued until his retirement.

In 1955, Alvern married Corraine Jacobs and to this union four children were born – Randy, Valora, Lyndall and Vern.

He took flying lessons and this became his dream hobby, soaring the skies. the neighbors learned to duck when they heard the plane as it was buzzing them.

Alvern was a lifetime member of the American Legion and dealt for several years at the Stag and Stagette in Hay Springs. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, reading, and playing cards. A daily cribbage game was always played to see who had to get the mail, but was it the winner or the loser? Sundays always included a “friendly” poker game with the siblings.

Alvern is survived by Corraine, his wife of 66 years, daughter Valora (daughter Amberleigh) Hammond, son Lyndall (sons Tanner and Drew), daughter-in-love Jodi, daughter-in-law Camy (daughter Desi (son Evan) Davison and Alex (wife Amanda and sons Finley and Ford)) Letcher, and daughter-in-law Shiela (sons Bryce, Nate (wife Erica and son Link) and Hunter and daughter Tauna) Letcher, and sister-in-law Donna (Bob) House.

He is also survived by his brother Gerald and sisters Charlyn and Loreen as well as many nieces and nephews and extended families.

Alvern was preceded in death by his parents, sons Randy and Vern, daughter-in-law Karla, grandson Evan, and sisters Marilyn and Aldean.
