Announcement On Possible Criminal Charges Agains SD Att General Expected This Morning

The prosecutor who’s been studying the Sept 12th traffic accident in which South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg hit and killed a pedestrian will reportedly announce today if criminal charges will be filed.

Hyde County State’s Attorney Emily Sovell hasn’t said anything, but Mark Vargo, her counterpart in Pennington County, has been assisting Sovell and says the announcement will be made this morning.

Ravnsborg was returning home from a Republican party event when he hit and killed 55-year old Joe Boever of Highmore about 10:30 near Highmore.

Ravnsborg says he thought he’d hit a deer and called 911, but neither he nor the local sheriff found anything. The attorney general discovered the body the next morning as he returned a car borrowed from the sheriff.

Public safety officials have said Ravnsborg was distracted before he drove onto the shoulder and hit Boever. Ravnsborg says he’s confident he did not commit a crime.
