Armed Robbery Suspects Commits Suicide To End Standoff

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) – The suspect in an armed robbery Tuesday afternoon in Rapid City took his own life a few hours later during a standoff with police in Custer.

Rapid City Police Public Information Officer Brendyn Medina says the suspect pointed a gun at a drugstore clerk on East St Patrick Street, demanded prescription painkillers, and left in a pickup after the clerk gave him the drugs.

Medina says a witness gave police the pickup’s description and license plate number, leading to it being spotted by police north of Custer.

A brief chase into Custer followed, leading to a standoff that ended about 7:30 when the man commited suicide.
