Brewer Stolen Gun Bill Headed To Governor

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – The Unicameral has given unanimous final approval to Gordon Senator Tom Brewer’s bill to help get stolen guns off the streets. LB 582 now goes to Governor Pete Ricketts for his signature.

The bill gives prosecutors increased authority to bring charges for receiving stolen firearms by adopting a new standard on whether a person should have known or had reasonable cause to believe that a gun was stolen.

Currently, a person must have actual knowledge or belief that a gun was stolen to be convicted of crimes related to receiving a stolen firearm. Possessing a gun that is believed to be stolen is a felony carrying a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
