The “Trip Advisor” online travel site has awarded Carhenge its Travelers Choice Award for 2020, putting the junked car replica of Stonehenge 2 miles north of Alliance in the top 10% of attractions worldwide.
Trip Advisor says on its Facebook page that it combs reviews, ratings and savings from travelers everywhere and use that information to decide on the Traveler’s Choice Awards.
Carhenge was constructed over a single weekend in June of 1987 by landowner Jim Reiners as part of a family get together. The only changes came in the early 1990s when a wave of patriotism led to replacing a handful of Japanese cars with American cars
Carhenge was not widely accepted by the Alliance community at first, but is now one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, drawing travelers from around the world.
