Chadron Native A COVID-19 Fatality In New York City

New York, New York – A Chadron native is among the more than 1,000 people in New York City who have died of the coronavirus.

66-year old Zachery Sandstrom passed away March 23 in a hospital, less than a week after first showing symptoms of COVID-19 and about 30 hours after entering the facility.

Sandstrom is the namesake and uncle of former Chadron High and Chadron State College football standout Zach Sandstrom with current Chadron High history teacher Mike Sandstrom another nephew.

The older Zac graduated from Chadron High in 1971 and attended Chadron State for a time, but had lived in New York City most of the past 4-plus decades working as a bartender.

His daughter Shannon told the Chadron Record that since his death, dozens of friends and co-workers of her father – people she’d never met – had contacted her to say how much Zac meant to them and how much they would miss him.
