Cheryl D. Bettelyoun

Visitation services for 69-year old Cheryl D. Bettelyoun will be Friday, April 17, 2020 from 10:00 AM until Noon at the Sioux Funeral Home, Pine Ridge, SD.

Visitation will be followed at 2:00 by graveside services at St Ignatius Catholic Cemetery, Wanblee, SD with Father Ron Seminara, S.J., officiating and traditional Lakota services by Mr Elroy Cross

Cheryl D. Bettelyoun “Wicahpi Wan Hanhepi El Wiyakpa Heca” was born on December 4, 1950 in Belle Fourche, SD to Aaron DeSersa, Sr. and Esther (Black Elk) DeSersa. Cheryl made her journey to the Spirit World on April 9, 2020 at the Monument Health Center in Rapid City, SD.

Cheryl was a long-time resident of the Eagle Nest District and she knew and loved every one of her relatives. She was proud of her culture and taught all of her grandchildren how to dance as well as make their own outfits. She also loved to watch old western movies and tv shows like Gunsmoke and Bonanza.

Cheryl loved the country life; she especially enjoyed calving season and taking care of her chickens.

Cheryl had an extensive education with 4 degrees she obtained from Oglala Lakota College: Associate Degree in General Studies, Associate Degree in Early Childhood, Associate Degree in Elementary Education, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education.

Cheryl worked among the family businesses; these included Ed’s Auto Sales in Rapid City and Buy Right Grocery in Wanblee, SD.

She was also a CNA at St. Mary’s Hospital in Denver, CO, a Public Safety Officer in Rapid City, SD, and a teacher for Crazy Horse School in Wanblee, SD, Headstart for OLC in Wanblee, SD, Early Childhood in Rapid City, SD, and in Long Valley, SD.

Above all, Cheryl was the best mother and grandmother to her children and grandchildren.

Cheryl is survived by her husband, Edward Bettelyoun, Sr. of Long Valley, SD; daughters, Gina (Michael) Curran of St. Francis, SD, Cabrini Bettelyoun of Long Valley, SD and Mary Janis of Mt. Home, ID; sons, Brian Bettelyoun, Darin (Francine) Bettelyoun and Edward Bettelyoun, Jr., all of Wanblee, SD; siblings, Clifton DeSersa, Mitchell DeSersa, Sherman DeSersa, Sr., Aaron (Sally) DeSersa and Olivia “Honey Bea” DeSersa, all of Manderson, SD; grandchildren, Dayton, Brianna, Amos, Cole, Aaron, Gage, Trenton II, and Dyson Bettelyoun, Charles Red Willow, Carter Moves Camp, Keisha Janis, Amanda Turney, Ashton Morrison, Dudes, Summer, and Marlee Blacklance, and DJ and Randy Kills In Water, Katie, Grace and Michael Curran; and great-grandchildren, Arrow Winters, Alarie Kills In Water, Anjelle Turney and Mikael Emnee.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents, Aaron & Esther (Black Elk) DeSersa; son, Trenton Bettelyoun I; and grandparents, Ben Black Elk, Ellen Bissonette, Louie DeSersa and Laura Stover.

Pallbearers will be Byron DeSersa, Myron Pourier, Jeffrey Catches, William Bettelyoun, Sherman DeSersa, Jr. Brice Long Soldier, Cody Whiting and Wayne Witt, Jr.

Honorary Pallbearers will be All Friends & Relatives.
