Visitation services for 69-year old David Lee Standing Soldier are Saturday, May 23, 2020 from 10:00-1:00 at the Sioux Funeral Home in Pine Ridge, SD, with traditional Lakota services: by Bear Cross and Pete Swift Bird

David “Dave” Lee Standing Soldier, “Chante Waste Wichasa” (Good Hearted Man) was born on July 30, 1950 in Alliance, NE to Stanley Standing Solider and Dorothy (Janis) Standing Soldier. Dave made his journey to the Spirit World on May 17, 2020 at the Pine Ridge I.H.S. Hospital in Pine Ridge, SD.

Dave grew up working on ranches and later lived in Rosebud, SD before moving to Kyle, SD where he met his wife, Pam (Zephier) Standing Soldier and made it home. Dave and Pam enjoyed a loving marriage of 38 years together.

Dave’s special gifts were his compassion, humility, humor, respect, and work ethic. He was a great storyteller; his laughter was full of warmth. He had a passion for helping people. He enjoyed reading, watching movies, and working on projects.

He recently worked as a Counselor Aide at Anpetu Luta Otipi. He was Medicine Root District Vice President, worked transportation as a bus driver for Little Wound, Porcupine, and Crazy Horse, worked for the Ambulance Service in Rosebud, CSAP Oglala Sioux Tribe, Security/Van Driver for the Prairie Wind Casino, and transportation for Allen Head Start.

He was a strong believer in sobriety. He was a quiet and humble man, but his presence could speak volumes.

Dave is survived by his wife, Pam Standing Soldier of Kyle, SD; daughters, Alice (David Medina) and Lee Ann Standing Soldier of Sioux City, IA; sons, Bernie Shot With Arrow of Kyle, SD and Rayphael O’Rourke of Pine Ridge, SD; grandchildren, Simone and Alisa Shot With Arrow of Kyle, SD, Alexis (Mike) Grant, David Medina, Jr., Duran Medina, Cody & Corey Four Killer, Reyna Standing Soldier, Scott Bliss, Jr., Gentil Standing Soldier, and Royce Freemont of Sioux City, IA; great grandchildren, Lilly and Ella Grant, Mia Medina, High Eagle, Julius, Luca, Shane, and Star Four Killer all of Sioux City, IA.

Dave was preceded in death by his brothers, Earl Standing Soldier, Stanley “Clement” Standing Soldier, and Amy Standing Soldier; parents, Stanley Standing Soldier and Dorothy Janis; step-father, Art Soden; and grandson, Riley Shot With Arrow.

Pallbearers will be Lloyd Bianas, Vincent Brewer, Jr., Chris Eagle Hawk, Tom Poor Bear, and Raulen Martin.

Honorary pallbearers will be All Transportation and Bus Drivers, Anpetu Luta Otipi Staff, Medicine Root District Executive Board, Clarence Walking Eagle & Family, and All Family, Friends, and Relatives.
