Funeral services for 78-year old James LaVern Hankins will be Thursday May 7, 2020, at Zion Lutheran Church in Hay Springs, NE.
For those unable to attend or are concerned about the coronavirus, a live virtual service will be available by selecting the link on the Chamberlain Chapel website.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 6th, from 6:00 – 7:00 PM, also at the Zion Lutheran Church.

James LaVern Hankins was born December 2, 1941, in Rushville, NE, to Jim and Violet (Eckerle) Hankins and passed away May 1st, 2020.
LaVern graduated from Hay Springs High School in 1959 and married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Bachmann, on June 4th, 1961. To this union was born two daughters: Karla and Kim.
LaVern began employment at Northwest Rural Public Power in 1966 and filled many roles during his 38 years of service with the REA.
He was very dedicated to the Hay Springs community, serving on the City Council and on the boards of the Pioneer Manor Nursing Home and Lister Sage Community Center.
He also was a member of the Hay Springs Volunteer Fire Department for many years.
LaVern was very active in Zion Lutheran Church, helping build the church and later serving as deacon, trustee, and treasurer.
He also spent many hours improving the Hay Springs golf course, including planting trees and establishing the clubhouse.
LaVern was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, never missing any of their activities.
He enjoyed many activities such as team roping, painting ceramics, golfing, traveling and camping. He was a sports enthusiast and a big supporter of the Hay Springs Hawks, Nebraska Cornhuskers and bull riding.
He will always be remembered as a man of high values with a great sense of humor and willingness to help others.
LaVern was preceded in death by his parents, sister Betty and her husband Tom Brownlow, sister-in-law Saundra Bachmann Roberts; and daughter; Karla Hankins Letcher.
LaVern is survived by his wife Barbara, daughter Kim, son-in-law; Lyndall Letcher, brothers Jerry (Judy) & Monte (Brenda), grandsons Tanner and Drew, in-laws, and numerous nieces and nephews.
