Masks will be required in the church. If you choose not to wear a mask. you are welcome to attend the graveside service in the Holly Cemetery at 11:00 am. It will be very casual and feel free to wear your camo gear.
Wayne’s cremains will be scattered in his favorite camping/hunting spots and the farm. Wayne was big in conservation, so in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Wild Turkey or the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
Wayne Gregory Krotz was born December 26, 1954, to Charles and Barbara Krotz, in Rushville. Hunting, fishing, hiking, camping – anything to do with the outdoors – was Wayne’s world. That is exactly what he was doing on a sheep hunt with Joey when he contracted COVID-19 and passed away August 19, 2021 in Albuquerque, NM.
Wayne grew up in the country on the family farm northwest of Rushville. He attended a one-room schoolhouse at District 44 through 8th grade and graduated from Rushville High School in 1973.
Wayne joined the Army National Guard that same year and was honorably discharged in 1979. He was very proud to serve his country.
He worked for Nebraska Beef as a meat cutter, Sheridan Livestock in the yards, Gordon Memorial Hospital in maintenance, Otte Packing cleanup and butcher, and Security 1st Bank on their mobile bank.
In 1991, he attended Chadron State College and graduated with a BA in Mathematics in 1997.
While square dancing at District 44, he became reacquainted with a classmate Rena Bishop and they were married in 1981. Rena was the love of Wayne’s life and they were best friends doing almost everything together.
This home is where they raised their three boys- Gregory John 1983, Dennis Wayne 1985 and Joseph William 1989. Wayne enjoyed watching the boys play sports and teaching them to fish and hunt. Later, his three grandsons were his pride and joy and he enjoyed taking them fishing.
After Rena graduated from nursing school in 2009, Wayne’s siblings asked them to move to the farm to live and take care of the mom. In 2012, Wayne and Rena were able to purchase the home place and in 2016 he inherited his 1/6 of the acreage.
Rena and Wayne both retired March 30, 2017 and have enjoyed travel. Their very first trip was 58 days in Canada and Alaska and enjoyed an Inside Passage Alaskan cruise in 2019.
Wayne was able to enjoy elk, deer and big horn sheep hunts with his boys in WY, AZ, and NM. They also did a lot of camping throughout the Black Hills, CO, NM, AZ, NE, WY, UT and MO. In 1975 he took a taxidermy correspondence course and taxidermy became one of his hobbies.
Wayne was looking forward to two hunts for himself and more hunts with Joey this fall in NM and AZ. The spring found him practicing his shooting with bow and arrow and he could hardly wait for the sheep hunt.
As a loving husband, father, and grandfather Wayne will be sadly missed by his wife (6 wks shy of 40 years) Rena, son Greg and Nikki, son Dennis and Melissa and Charlie, and son Joey, Jessica, George and Benjamin.
Also missing Wayne are his siblings Tom (Judy), John, Kathleen (Bill), Rosalie (Don), and sister-in-law Paula, and Rena’s siblings Jim, Mina (Malcolm). Dean (Merry), John (Ila), George, Laura (Rick), and David and their families.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Barbara Krotz, his brother Melvin, his brother-in-law Don, and his sister-in-law Julie.
