Coomes Added To Eagles Football Coaching Staff

CSC Head Football Coach Jay Long announced the addition of Assistant Coach Wes Coomes on Wednesday, to fill the role of special teams coordinator with defensive back position coaching duties.

“We’re excited to have Wes on board,” said Long. “He’s been an outstanding special teams and position coach at a couple of different stops, and we’re looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the table.”

Coomes comes to CSC after one year performing the same responsibilities at NAIA member Ottawa University of Kansas. There, his defensive unit had the No. 1 passing defense in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference and was No. 13 nationally in 2021. That defensive backfield included 2021 AP NAIA All-America Second Team defensive back Devin Johnston.

His special teams also recorded the No. 3 kickoff return average in the league that season, as Johnston also picked up an all-conference honorable mention nod at kick returner.

Coomes was a member of the OU football team in 2012 and 2013, twice being named All-KCAC and helped lead the Braves to two NAIA Football Championship Series.

Prior to returning to Ottawa, Coomes was the special teams coordinator, the recruiting coordinator, and coached defensive backs at Concordia University in Seward, Neb. He spent the 2015 and 2016 seasons as a graduate assistant with the Bulldogs.

From 2015 to 2021, Coomes has coached two NAIA All-Americans and 14 all-conference selections. In 2015, the CU defense was ranked fifth in the NAIA in defensive passing efficiency (96.1) and was no. 16 in the NAIA in total defense in 2016. The Bulldog special teams were ranked fifth in the NAIA in 2017 in kick return yards per attempt. In 2018 and 2020, Concordia was ranked eighth in the NAIA in kickoff return yards per attempt.

Coomes graduated from Concordia with a masters in athletic administration. He earned a bachelors in sports studies from Ottawa.
