CSC Has Big MLK Day Planned

CHADRON – Chadron State College has a more extensive Martin Luther King Jr Day celebration than usual, in part because of a new state college system policy that dismisses classes for the holiday for the first time.

The CSC Social Sciences Club has organized most of the activities over the year and advisor/professor Dr David Nesheim says the focus this year is award-winning hip-hop performer Ali Tomineek.

The 22-year old Tomineek started his music career at age 13 and his first internet video went viral, logging a million hits in a little over a year. Once it reached 5-million views, a Phoenix radio station invited him to perform on the air.

Tomineek is a rare family-friendly hip-hop performer who doesn’t use profanity in his concerts. Social Sciences Club member Tony Madrigal says the hope is that the public will turn out and hear a genre of music they might otherwise skip.

The MLK Day activities begin at 9:00 AM in the Student Center Bordeaux Room with Nesheim and 2 students talking about how Chadron State has marked the day in the past and how the observance may change in the future.

They will be followed at 10:00 by CSC professor Dr Kurt Kinbacher and a talk titled “The Long Journey to Birmingham: The Movement behind MLK’s Jailhouse Letter.”

Wrapping up the morning will be the movie “Southside With You”, a 2016 biographical romantic drama telling the story of the first date between Barak and Michelle Obama. It runs from 11-12:30

One of the annual high points of MLK Day at Chadron State is the march from downtown to the college. It begin at 1:00 and ends at the Ballroom for Tomineek’s concert.

The MLK Day celebration will end after Tomineek’s evening talk with an Open Mic Night at 7:30, also in the Ballroom, sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta.
