Funeral services for 56-year old David Luta are Wed, April 27, 2022 at 4:00 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Hall in Kyle, SD, with Father Edmund Yainao, SJ, officiating and traditional Lakota services by Larry Swalley

Visitation precedes the funeral from noon-4:00, also at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Hall in Kyle.

David Wayne Hiŋhaŋ Luta was born June 16, 1990 in Pine Ridge, SD to Alida Pierce. David made his journey on April 19, 2022 at the Pine Ridge I.H.S. Hospital.

David grew up in Kyle, SD and attended Little Wound School from Kindergarten through High School. During his youth, he loved sports and played in many basketball & baseball tournaments. David worked various construction jobs; his choice of career was roofing. 

David played a significant role in the family, household helping his mother raise his younger siblings and was always prepared to take on those responsibilities. David was loving, caring, & giving. David’s laugh was contagious, his smile would make people’s day and he will always be remembered as the room’s light.

David is survived by his mother, Alida Pierce; daughters, Layla & Keira Red Owl; brother, Lane red Owl; sisters, Angel (Joe), Shay (Jesus) Hazin; grandparents, Audrey Rodriquez, Richard Pierce father, Dave Red Owl; Phyllis & Geno Winters, Dixie Spotted Eagle, Amy Rodriquez, Liz (Sam) One Horn, Art Clifford, Alex (Carlene) Rodriquez & Boy, Billy Clifford, and Ed Clifford. David loved his nephew & niece, Joseph Lee & Ariana Hazin; great aunts, Tudy Pierce & Debbie Nearing; great uncles, Marlon Garret, John Pierce, and Earl Pierce; aunts, Tara Pierce, Electa Young-Pierce, Gina Campbell, Sasha Gay, Rose (Chris) Blue Thunder, Raina Rodriquez, Pumpkin & Christy Pierce, Tammy Twiss, Amanda Reddy, Sharon, Maggie, & Robin Two Crow, Jolynn Two Eagle, Lois Winters, and Farrah Winters; uncles, Dustin Kills Straight, Tyrell & Tanner Pierce, Robert Janis, Mitchell Gay & Archie (Denise) Red Owl, Jess Pierce, & Joey Red Owl; and special cousins, Ashley, Angela, & Jessica (Tony) Two Bulls, Audi & Eden Rodriquez, Rae Clifford, Rae Dawn & Billie Jean, Lynden Red Owl, Winter & Lakyen Kills Straight, William Sutton, and Stacy Winters.

David was preceded in death by his brother, Lil Joe Winters; David and Joe were best friends known to people as the “Lil’s” together they lived and loved life to the fullest; brother, Baby Boy Pierce; uncles, Dan Kills Straight Shilo Pierce, and Ronnie Red Owl; great uncles, Brian Garrett, Vetal Two Crow, and Warren Rodriquez; great grandparents, Ethel Wounded Horse-Clifford-Rodriquez, Viola Hornbeck, Mary Ellen Bull Bear, Richard Pierce, Sr., Moses & Sophia Bull Bear; cousins, Arta Winters, Sophia & Samantha One Horn, and Mariah Pawnee Leggins; and numerous cousins.

Pallbearers will be Les Two Bulls, Dusty “Red” Kills Straight, Cary Winters, Myron “Snoop” Janis, Larry Rodriquez, Gavin Two Crow, Joe Rosales, and Quin’Tijah Pierce.
