Deadwood Council Imposes COVID-19 Closures On Casinos, Others

DEADWOOD, S.D. (AP) – The Deadwood city council yesterday officially approved a resolution closing non-essential businesses, including casinos, because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The council also gave first reading to a nearly identical permanent ordinance that doesn’t take effect until a second reading. The resolution took effect immediately.

Council members assured business owners that the resolution and eventually the ordinance are not only for the safety of the public, but also for employees and to hopefully preserve the summer tourist season.

Deadwood Gaming Association executive direcxtor Mike Rodman says the order was not unexpected because every other commercial casino in the United State has already closed

Rodman calls it “a tough day for Deadwood” because the city’s economy had been doing well “until the world changed with the pandemic.”

He says the hope is that Deadwood “can get to the other side of this,” reopen the casinos as soon as possible, and move forward.
