The Chadron State College softball team gave the MSU-Denver Roadrunners their first conference loss of the season Sunday, after splitting the double header in Denver.
Chadron State fell in game one, 1-0, before earning a 9-6 victory in game two.
The split moves CSC’s record to 7-16 overall and 5-11 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Roadrunners are now 18-7 and 15-1 in the RMAC
In the low scoring game one, the hosts only run came in the bottom of the first inning. Chadron State had two errors which allowed Alexia Boring to reach first and eventually reach home, scoring the games only run.
Tori Haug pitched a complete game and only allowed one hit, but received the loss for CSC. Haug walked three batters and struck out four. The games lone run was unearned.
Jenna Medhus allowed five hits and struck out eight in the complete game victory.
Unlike game one, game two was high scoring with plenty of homeruns for CSC. The Eagles recorded five home runs in the victory, trying the school record.
CSC took an early 1-0 lead after starting pitcher Delaney Farnsworth singled, allowing Bailey Steinke to score.
In the top of the second and top of the third inning, Mackenzie Kroll and Kenzie Garner both hit solo homeruns, respectively.
With the score 3-0, Jessica Henchenski hit a two-run homerun, scoring Farnsworth, also in the top of the third.
With CSC holding a 5-0 lead, the Roadrunners responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning.
The hosts hit their way through the lineup in the half inning, starting with Shelby Robb being walked and ending with her grounding out.
Between Robb’s at bats, MSU-Denver would hit three triples and one double to take a 6-5 lead.
The Eagles responded with two runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings.
In the fourth, a Kenzie Garner two-out double scored Stienke and Brady Laucomer.
More homeruns occurred in the top of the fifth as Lauren Zimmerman and Henchenski would hit back to back solos, giving CSC the 9-6 lead and victory.
Farnsworth pitched the complete game victory for CSC. In seven innings, she allowed seven hits, six runs, walked three batters and struck out six.
The Roadrunners had four different pitchers seeing action, with Audrey Burt receiving the loss.
Seven different Eagles recorded hits in the victory, with four having two hits and Zimmerman having three.
CSC is back in action next weekend as they host Colorado School of Mines. Games one and two are scheduled for 12 and 2 p.m. on March 18.
