Fire Causes Major Damage To SD State Fairgrounds Beef Complex

A fire around midnight Saturday morning extensively damaged the Beef Complex at the South Dakota State Fairgrounds in Huron.

Some reports say the damage was enough that the building was declared a total loss.

Officials say no people or animals were injured, but several other nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution.

The adjacent Hippodrome also sustained damage when an explosion blasted a door from the Beef Complex into the southeast corner of the hippodrome.

The blaze forced the cancellation of the South Dakota Barrel Racing Association Finals scheduled for later in the day in the Beef Complex Arena.

The Huron, Cavour, and Wolsey Fire Departments responded to the situation. The State Fire Marshal, the Huron Fire Department, and the Department of Criminal Investigation will be conducting a joint investigation into the cause of the fire.
