Graveside services for 56-year old Franklin “Cody” Janis are Thursday, March 17, 2022 at 11:00 at the Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Pine Ridge, SD.

Franklin Cody Janis, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, joined his family in the Spirit World on February 22, 2022 in Lawton, OK.

Cody was born on September 19, 1965 on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation to Curtis and Bernice (DeSersa) Janis. Cody’s paternal grandparents are the late Francis and Cora (Bird Necklace) Janis and his maternal grandparents are the late Alex Desersa and Angeline (Turning Holy) Standing Elk. Cody was raised on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation and later moved with his mother to Wapato, Washington to live with his older brother Ted after their dad’s passing. 

Cody was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis & Bernice(DeSersa) Janis; brothers, Theodore “Ted” Janis, William “Billy” Janis, and David DeSersa; sister, Beverly; brother-in-law, Ronald Wermy; and nephews, Ronnie Wermy, Jared Janis, and Alex DeSersa. Cody is from a family of Lakota Warriors who believed in military service to our country, they also precede him in death. Cody’s family of Lakota Warriors include: Grandpa Francis Janis, a World War I veteran; his father Curtis Janis; uncles, Clarence, Ival “Spot”, Guy “Boob”, & Arthur “Pat” Janis, and Lakota traditional warrior uncle, Wendell Janis.

Cody is survived by his brother, Ronald Janis; nephews, Craig, Chad, & Curtis Janis, Billy Joel Janis, Braydon Janis, and Darek DeSersa; niece, Angie Wermy-Williams and Chanz Janis; sister, LaDean Hawk Wing-Carrol; The Janis takoja’s: Jonathan, Kristopher, Zachery, Mazzy, Daisy, Carlos, Santana, lil’ Craig, Diego, Elijah, Maleya, Chayton, Precious and Payton Williams; great-grandchildren, Braxton and Simakaia Janis, Tom and Darlene (Janis) Short Bull & family; cousins, Vee, Emerald, Francine, Cora, Terry, Ival, Patrick, Eileen, Lula, Wanda, and their families; sisters-in-law, Cheryl Whistler and Maxine Brings Him Back-Janis; and All of the Janis Tiyospaye on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation that survive Cody.

Honorary pallbearers will be All Friends & Relatives.
