The Hay Springs Hawks picked up a sweep in the opening round of D2-12 sub-district action Monday, and setter Samantha Toof earned her 1,000 career set in the 25-10, 25-20, 25-12 win over Crawford.

The Hawks breezed through the first set, but the Lady Rams gave them a scare in the second, taking a 16-15 lead, which they extended to 19-16 with a Tianna Clark ace and a Carly Lemmon kill. A tip and serving by Molly Spicer, who arrowed in two aces for the Hawks swung the advantage back to the Hawks. Crawford tied the score at 20 on a Hay Springs error, but five consecutive kills by the Hawks, including three by Gabby Twarling closed out the set.

Up 2-0, Hay Springs stumbled early in the third, allowing Crawford to take a 5-0 lead on a Lemmon kill and their own errors. A kill by Breely Smith gave the Hawks the kickstart they needed and they pulled within one. Clark landed a kill to inch the Rams ahead once more, but a block by Smith and back-to-back kills by Twarling and Mya Turman gave Hay Springs a 9-7 lead. Turman followed her kill with two more and four aces on eight attempts from the serving line to make it 17-8. Hay Springs rolled to the finish, ending the set with kills by Emily Nelson, Toof and Smith.

The Hawks will play in the sub-district finals Tuesday for a shot at the district finals.

Crawford ends their season 4-24.
