The Hay Springs Hawks held off a late challenge by the Sioux County Warriors Friday to take a 41-32 gridiron win.

After scoring just once in the entire first half, Sioux County added four touchdowns to the board to erase a 34-6 deficit with a quarter and a half remaining. Hay Springs scored the first three goals of the game for a 21-0 lead in the second quarter. Sioux County’s Tucker Monroe raced 43 yards down field with just under three minutes left in the half to make it 21-6.

But the Hawks started the second half strong, adding two more touchdowns for that 34-6 lead with eight minutes to go. The Warriors tacked on two TDs back-to-back, the first by Leif Meidell, and the second on a run by Ritchie Gutierrez after Sioux County recovered its own onside kick. With the score at 34-18, Hay Springs took less than a minute to race down field to make it 41-18.

In the final three minutes, Sioux County managed two more scores, again by Gutierrez and Meidell, but the clock ran out before they had an opportunity to move ahead of the Hawks.
