Inmate From Scotts Bluff County Dies At State Pen

Loading

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services says an inmate from Scotts Bluff County died Saturday at the State Penitentiary in Lincoln.

The cause of death for 26-year old Philip Garcia has not been determined, but agency policy calls for an autopsy while state law requires a grand jury investigation anytime a person dies in custody or in the process of being arrested.

Garcia was 4-½-years into a 26-to-36 year sentence for assault on a peace officer, felony use of a deadly weapon, and theft by taking.

The bulk of the sentence was for stabbing a Scottsbluff police officer who was trying to arrest Garcia on an assault complaint. During a struggle, the officer suffered wounds to the face that required 18 stitches.

The theft conviction was from an unrelated case, but its one-year prison term was to be served after the others.
