It’s Tire Amnesty Days At SWANN

SWANN, the Solid Waste Agency of Northwest Nebraska, is holding Tire Amnesty Days Friday and Saturday from 8:00 to 3:00 at its Chadron transfer station at the east end of East Niobrara Street.

Executive Director Jack Nemeth says SWANN received a $27,000 grant from the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy allowing the collection of 150-tons of used tires.

Each non-commercial SWANN household can bring in up to 20 car and light truck tires, 20 truck/trailer tires, and 10 large equipment tires without charge, but Nemeth emphasizes it’s open to only SWANN customers.

In one potentially significant change from past years, each customer is now responsible for bringing in their own tires. Nemeth says it’s a way to make sure no one is bringing more tires than allowed by claiming they’re just helping a friend or family member get tires in.

Under the terms of the grant, Amnesty Days ends as soon as the 116.5 ton total is reached, so every load of tires coming in will be weighed. Nemeth is bring in extra manpower to help.

With the extra help, Nemeth thinks customers should get through the process of dropping off tires in a half-hour or less – depending on demand at any given time.

The SWANN Tire Amnesty Days are scheduled to run from 8:00 to 3:00 both tomorrow and Saturday.
