John was born in Rapid City but was raised by his uncle Warren and Aunt Pat in Kansas City from infancy to his teen years which is the reason for his southern accent he loved so much.

He returned to his mother as a teen and spent the rest of life with family and friends in and around South Dakota.

John traveled a lot during his years as roofer, meat packer and finally a carpenter and made that his choice of labor accomplishing many projects around Rapid City.

He played various instruments with one being the organ (which he never told anyone), but his #1 passion was the guitar and honoring blues and rock n roll legends.

John had two boys who are spitting images of him that he loved and adored. It was hard for him to show compassion and love like any other father would have and without a choice everyone around him accepted that part about him.

He was very proud of his boys and watching them play ball was an honor for him and you cpi;d see it in his eyes.  John always dedicated his prayers towards them and knew deep down they both loved him back in their own way!

John is survived by his sons, Adrian Branham & Michael Janis; sister Charlene (Seth, Jr.) Janis-Dismounts Thrice; uncle Raymond (Sylvia) Ecoffey; and aunt Sharon (Ecoffey) Bales.
