Graveside services for 82-year old John Wayne Long Sr are Friday, Nov 13, 2020 at 4:15 PM at Our Lady of the Sioux Catholic Cemetery in Oglala, SD, with traditional Lakota services by Mr Sam Long
Visitation will precede the services from 2:00 – 4:00 PM, Friday at the Sioux Funeral Home in Pine Ridge, SD.
John Wayne Long Sr was born on Jan 10, 1938 in Pine Ridge, SD, to David Long and Christine (Bad Heart Bull) Long and lived a full circle when he journeyed to the Spirit World on Nov 6, 2020 at the Pine Ridge I.H.S. Hospital in Pine Ridge, SD.
John grew up in Oglala and left South Dakota on a relocation program to California. A mechanic in California, he boarded a city bus and married his lifelong soulmate Marie, a secretary, on their lunch break in Hollywood. John and Marie later moved back to Pine Ridge, SD.
Know as “The Chief” to his family and friends, John will be missed for his warrior songs, war stories, jokes, OST Codes, speaking Lakota on a loudspeaker in his pickup truck, tribal politics, and his knowledge of Treaty Rights.

Red Star, Raelynn Cottier, Wiyaka Long Black Cat, and Alexis Jumping Eagle; and nieces Corrine, Mavis, and Marian Bald Eagle.
