Burial services for 75-year old Lawrence “Larry” Montileaux are Tues, Dec 8, 2020 at 11:00 AM at the Lakota Freedom Veterans Cemetery near Kyle, SD. 

Visitation Services are Sat, Dec 5, 2020 from noon to 4:00 PM at the Matilda Montileaux residence, No Flesh House 111, with Lay Minister Anthony Wounded Head officiating and all spiritual leaders welcome to join the traditional Lakota services

Lawrence Jess Montileaux “Tusweća Maza” of No Flesh Creek, Medicine Root District, Kyle, was born on March 4, 1945 in Kyle to Helena Bull Bear-Montileaux and Joseph Montileaux Sr. Lawrence made his journey to the Spirit World on Nov 29, 2020, at the St. Luke’s Presbyterian Hospital in Denver, CO. 

Larry was a US Navy Veteran, a retired cowboy – a ranch hand hired by Kelli Porch-Word and Ken Lensegrav as well as a self-funded rodeo cowboy who competed in bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc riding and bull-riding. In his younger years he worked for the U-Cross Ranch in Nebraska. 

Larry was a meatcutter and boner for the Nebraska Beef packers, moved to Colorado for a few years working for Donahoe Meat Packers in Denver and then Ft. Collins, CO. In moving back home he worked as a breakfast cook for Little Wound School with James Christensen as his supervisor. 

He loved being outside and started doing labor work for GBA construction before retiring. After retirement he was recruited to work for the National Indian Council on Aging. His supervisor was Rose Frazier. 

He was a self-taught artisan in making artifacts pertaining to Lakota warfare. Everything from war-clubs, bows and arrows, buffalo rib bone knives and sheathes, shields to drums, purses, jewelry, diamond willow canes and coupsticks. 

Lawrence leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Matilda Ruff Montileaux; his children, Bert Montileaux, Sr., Belva Montileaux of Iowa, Gladys Montileaux of Arizona, Hawkeye Montileaux of Kyle, Sundown Montileaux, Sr. of Wanblee, Calvin Ferguson of Kyle, and Troy Ferguson of Kyle; brothers, Frances Montileaux & Moses Montileaux; and sisters, Theresa Mendoza and Sheralda Montileaux; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Montileaux & Helena Bull Bear; grandparents, Julie(Morrison) & Jess Bull Bear, Julia (Palmier) & Joseph Montileaux I; brothers, Joseph Montileaux III and Martin Montileaux; sisters Pauline Montileaus and Mabel Rosales; daughter, Valarie Hunter; and three grandchildren, Duane “JR” Apple Jr, Mariah LeeAnn Montileaux and Bert Lee “BJ” Montileaux Jr. 

Pallbearers will be Bob Amiotte, Robert Montileaux, Duane Lafferty, Ronnie Ferguson, Richard Two Crow, and Chuck Hernandez. 

Honorary pallbearers will be Kola Iyuha, Titakuye na Otakuye pi ki. All Friends, Family and Relatives.

Arrangements are entrusted with Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD.
