Funeral services for 77-year old  Leola “Lee” Goodman are Monday, October 4, 2021 at 9:00 at the Smallwood residence in Denby, SD, with The Reverend Harold Eagle Bull officiating.

Burial will follow at 1:30 at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD.

A two-night wake service starts Saturday, October 2, at 3:00, also at the Smallwood residence in Denby.

Leola E. (Black Horse) Goodman was born on September 27, 1944, in Clearmont, WY, to Charles Black Horse and Vivian Frazier. Leola made her journey to the Spirit World on September 27, 2021, at her home in Denby.

Lee, as many of her friends & family called her, married Cedric “Sid” Goodman Sr on September 5, 1969, in Hot Springs, SD. To this union they expanded their immediate family by 4.

As they enjoyed 49 years of marriage, the family grew to include great- and great-great grandchildren. Both Lee and Sid always enjoyed family events of their ever-growing family.

For the first few years of marriage Lee & Sid resided in Spearfish, SD, then returned to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation where they began to build their lives.

Lee began her employment career at the “Moccasin Factory.” She moved on and dedicated over two decades of civil service to Pine Ridge Schools, serving in the capacities of paraprofessional and as a library assistant.

Her love for education was indicative through her years of service, expansion of her own educational aspirations (acquiring her associate degree in Education), and athletic sport attendance.

She also had a creative side which reflected in her bulletin boards. The impact of her tenure created lifelong student connections as they bloomed into adults. Lee always enjoyed hearing from each student as years went by.

Many people did not get to know a side of Leola; that was her craziness. She often sang and danced in the kitchen. A very compassionate, resilient, and formidable lady can definitely summarize her qualities. She will be forever loved and missed.

Lee is survived by her children, Marie (Susan “Que”) Goodman, Cedric Goodman Jr, Charlene (Nick) Smallwood and Danielle “Shades” Goodman; siblings, David Goings, Allison Goings, Diane Goings and Jonathan Goings; 18 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Lee was preceded in death by her husband, Cedric Goodman Sr; parents, Charles Black Horse and Vivian Frazier; siblings, Jonette Black Horse, Charline Black Horse, Luke Goings, Jr. and Mark Goings; 1 grandchild;  maternal grandparents, Robert Frazier Sr and Lena (Conroy) Frazier; and Aunts/Uncles, Harold Frazier, Lloyd Frazier, Robert Frazier Jr, Jewel Frazier, Irene Frazier and Victoria “Corky” Frazier.

Pallbearers will be Joseph Kerbaugh, Mike Red Cloud, Cedric Goodman III, John Batten, Jr., Kristopher Kerbaugh and Russ Fast Wolf.

Honorary pallbearers will be Pine Ridge High School Staff & Students, Myron Standing Bear & Family, Stewy Mousseaux & Family, Sylvia Red Cloud & Family, Former Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell, Kiri Chamberlain, Diane Kelly & Family, Gail Kelly & Family, Chris Whiting, Janet Quijas, Christine Laytay & Family, Russell Fast Wolf & Family, Susie Sutton & Family, Monica Tyon & Family, Theresa Black Horse & Family Howard Little Hawk & Family, Linda Bad Wound & Family, Doris Goings & Family, Julie Goings & Family, Audrey Thompson & Family, Marty Brewer & Family, Cecil & Deanna Frazier, Jackie Big Crow, Marliss Big Crow and All Friends & Relatives.
