Little Testing May Distort COVID-19 Numbers In SD

The South Dakota Dept of Health reported just 302 new confirmed and 43 probable COVID-19 cases Tuesday.

It’s part of a recent downward trend in new COVID-19 cases, but testing data from the Washington Post suggests that might be misleading.

That’s because South Dakota ranks 47th out of the 50 states in the number per capita of new tests reported in the last 7 days  – 1,313 per 100,000 residents

Tuesday’s report included 2 deaths and 1,447 recoveries to drop the number of active cases under 12,000 for the first time in weeks at 11,519. That includes 435 who are hospitalized.

Since the start of the pandemic, South Dakota has had 84,209 confirmed cases with 78,919 recoveries and 1,261 deaths.
