Funeral services for 51-year old Lonnie Richards are Monday, September 14, 2020 at 10:00 AM at the Pine Ridge Pow Wow Grounds in Pine Ridge, SD, with Mr Charles McGaa officiating and traditional Lakota services by Mr Juan Mesteth

Burial services follow that afternoon at 3:00 PM at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD.

A one-night wake service starts Sunday, September 13, 2020 at 4:00 PM, also at the Pine Ridge Pow Wow Grounds

Lonnie Thomas Richards “Tokia Mani” was born on September 22, 1968 in Pine Ridge, SD to Lester Jack and Sandra (Richards) Blue Bird. Lonnie made his journey to the Spirit World on September 3, 2020 at the Monument Health Hospital in Rapid City, SD.

Lonnie attended high school in Pine Ridge, SD was a drummer in the band and also a State Champion Cross Country Runner before graduating from Pine Ridge High School in 1988. Lonnie joined the United States Army on August 23, 1988 and went to basic training in Fort Benning, GA. Lonnie married Betty Watters on July 14, 1989.

During Lonnie’s military service, he fought in Desert Storm and was part of the 82nd Airborne Division. Lonnie was honorably discharged on September 22, 1992 in Fort Bragg, NC.

Lonnie is survived by his spouse, Betty Watters-Richards; children, Ian Richards, Luke Richards, and Leah Richards; grandchildren, Light Richards, Alexia Red Bear, Kodreis Herman, Kingston Bagola, Andre DuBray, Franis Bagola, Damen Watters, David Waters, Jr., and Diane Eagle Hawk; nephews, Patrick, Winston, and Preston Little Moon; nieces, Bryanne Blue Bird and Tianna Blue Bird; sisters, Kimimila Jack, Jeanette Richard-Black Elk, Kathleen (James) Peterson, Melinda (Darrell) Spotted Elk, Theresa Blue Bird, and Carla (Tom) Cheyenne; brothers, Ryan Blue Bird, Howard Blue Bird, Christopher Blue Bird, Tommy Blue Bird, Bryan Blue Bird, Jesse Jack, Lester Jack, Jr., Gene Jack, Charles Jack, Ben Jack, Lavern Jack, Lyle Jack, Sr., and Yamni Jack.

Lonnie was preceded in death by his mother, Sandra (Bryan) Blue Bird; grandparents, Thomas & Emma (Two Crow) Richards and Leonard & Alice (Holy Elk) Jack; grandson, Alexander Richards; brothers, Ronnie Richards and Belle Blue Bird; sisters, Brenda Blue Bird, Crystal Little Moon, and Tesse Jack; aunts, Carmen Fullen, Clema Jack, and Kadell Bell; and uncles, Leonard Jack, Jr., Brian Richards, Raymond Richards, and Douglas Richards.

Pallbearers will be Ace No Braid, Alfred Red Shirt, Anthony Broken Nose, Thad Richards, Marty Zephier, Sheldon Two Crow, Marvin Richards, Jr., Richard Little Bear, Jr., and Joe Picotte.
