Man Wounded, Suspect In Custody After Shooting At Rushville Auction Barn – UPDATE

One Pine Ridge Reservation man is hospitalized and another in custody following a shooting Wednesday afternoon at Sheridan County Livestock in Rushville.

Nebraska State Patrol spokesman Cody Thomas says 44-year old Gilbert Grooms of Oglala is being held in the Sheridan County Jail in Rushville for attempted 1st-degree murder, 1st degree assault, felony use of a weapon, and terroristic threats

The victim, 35-year old Charles Winters of Martin, is in Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff with non-life-threatening injuries.

Thomas says the preliminary investigation showed Grooms and Winters were arguing when Grooms got a shotgun from his vehicle and fired it in Winters’ direction. Winters retreated to his own vehicle and Grooms shot at it multiple times.

Winters then fled around a trailer, but was hit in the midsection when Grooms fired again. Grooms remained at the scene and was arrested by Sheridan County Sheriff’s deputies and taken to the county jail in Rushville.

Winters was taken by ambulance to Gordon Memorial Hospital, then flown to Regional West with the Sheriff’s Office requesting assistance from the State Patrol about 5:25. The Patrol has taken the lead in the investigation, which remains ongoing

The first word on the shooting was a post on the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page about 7:00 pm confirming the incident, an arrest, and that the shooting victim was taken to the hospital, but gave no other information

The post did say the Sheriff’s Office wanted “to let everyone know…that there is no threat to the community.”

  1. Violence in a small community! Getting scary for sure. This is my community that where I am from. Where I live is in a city now, but for a small community, really!

  2. Neither man was from Rushville. They both were at a location where people from far and beyond gather to sell livestock.
Look at the history of violence in Rushville. You may notice that many have involved persons from Rushville and nearby. The town of Rushville has had it’s share of violence. Don’t judge the safety of the town by the violence of outsiders who happen to be within the city limits.
No town, regardless of size, is immune to violence.
