Supporters of legalizing medical marijuana have launched a new campaign to place the issue before voters in a future year.
An initiative petition drive gathered enough signatures to put it on the ballot this year despite the limits of the coronavirus pandemic, but the Nebraska Supreme Court blocked the measure earlier this month.
The justices ruled that by not only legalizing the use of medical pot but also setting up a system for legal production the measure violated the requirement that a ballot measure deal with only one subject.
. Campaign activists have already submitted new paperwork to Secretary of State Bob Evnan with simpler ballot language in hopes of stopping a similar court challenge next time.
Supporters say they also plan to introduce a similar measure as a bill in next year’s Legislature, although previous efforts to do so have failed amid opposition from conservatives.
