Minorities Account For Disproportionate Share Of Coronavirus Cases In Neb

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – The head of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services says the coronavirus pandemic appears to be taking a disproportionate toll on the state’s Hispanic, Asian and black residents.

CEO Dannette Smith says data compiled so far is startling and state officials need to do more to address the problem.

Nebraska is 87% white, but on Friday when the state knew the races of 9,630 of the 13,261 confirmed virus cases, Hispanics made up 2,430 or more than 25% of those cases – even though Hispanics make up just 11% of the state population.

The percentage of Hispanics was even higher among those hospitalized with the disease – about 40%.
