Nebraska To Light Capitol In Honor Of Ukraine

Governor Pete Ricketts has joined the growing list of officials supporting sanctions against Russia for its ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

Ricketts says the “unprovoked aggression cannot be tolerated” and that “the free world must unite to punish Putin and isolate Russia” by stepping up “sanctions on Russia’s energy exports to cut off funding of Putin’s war machine” because

The governor is also encouraging  Nebraskans to pray for the Ukrainian people, who have suffered innocent women and children killed by what he calls “the Russian military’s indiscriminate shelling.”

Ricketts says Nebraska is showing its support for Ukraine and the sacrifices of its people in part by illuminating the State Capitol in blue and yellow – the colors of the Ukrainian flag – for the next 9 days, through Sunday the 13th.

The governor is also encouraging businesses and government entities throughout Nebraska to light up their buildings to show support for Ukraine.

Ricketts says the state has thoroughly reviewed state contracts and determined it hasn’t done business with a Russian-based company since 2003.

A separate review by the Nebraska Investment Council found the State’s financial portfolios had very little exposure to Russia prior to its invasion of Ukraine, and that exposure is decreasing.

The Council and its managers say they’re monitoring and complying with all sanctions against Russia.
