New Jobless Claims Inch Up Again In Neb, SD

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – The coronavirus pandemic still having an impact on unemployment around the country. Nebraska saw a small uptick in new unemployment applications last week after several weeks of declining numbers

The U.S. Department of Labor reports 4,918 Nebraskans filed for jobless benefits, 221 more than the week before. New filings had gone down every week since hitting a record of nearly 27,000 during the week that ended April 4.

The number of South Dakotans applying for unemployment benefits continues to rise. The South Dakota Dept of Labor and Regulation says there were 1,006 initial unemployment claims last week, up 126 from the week before .

The state has received more than 53,000 initial jobless claims since mid-March when layoffs began to steadily increase because of the coronavirus pandemic. Nationwide, there were 1.5 million initial weekly unemployment claims last week, a decrease of 58,000.
