New Year’s Day Earthquake In NE Neb

GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) – Northeast Nebraska literally had a rockin’ New Year’s Day as the U-S Geological Survey reported a 2.9 magnitude earthquake around noon Central time.

USGS geophysicist Paul Caruso in Golden, Colo, said the quake occurred about 5 miles underground and was centered roughly 2-miles east-southeast of Chambers or 18 miles south-southwest of O’Neill.

Caruso said that as of late in the day, there had been no reports of people feeling the shock, but he encouraged anyone who did to go his agency’s website – USGS.gov – and describe any shaking or things falling down – adding that descriptions are helpful, even with small quakes.

Caruso also said an earthquake in the area of O’Neill is unusual, but not unheard of as “small quakes are possible in any part of the United States.”
