3 Pickup Crash Near Edgemont Kills One, Hospitalizes 3

The South Dakota Highway Patrol says one person was killed and 3 hospitalized in a 3-vehicle crash late Sunday afternoon on Hwy 18 near Edgemont.

Names have not been released.

The Highway Patrol says the accident occurred at 5:00 about 3 miles east of Edgemont when a 57-year old man driving eastbound in a Toyota pickup slowed to make a left turn onto a county road.

His pickup was rear-ended by a GMC pickup driven by a 19-year-old woman. The impact sent the first pickup into the westbound lane where it was hit by a Chevy pickup.

The Toyota tipped over and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators have not determined if he was wearing a seat belt.

The 53-year old man driving the Chevy pickup and 1 of his 3 passengers, a 57-year-old woman, were flown by air ambulance to a Rapid City hospital.

Another passenger, a 43-year-old woman, was driven to the Hot Springs hospital. All 3 were described as having serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The third passenger in the Chevy, a 58-year-old man, was uninjured, while the 19-year old driver of the GMC pickup suffered only minor injuries. She and all 4 occupants of the Chevy were wearing seat belts.

No citations have been issued, but the accident remains under investigation by the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
