All SD Voters To Be Sent Absentee Ballot Applications Posted by John Axtell Date: April 11, 2020 6 Views PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -The South Dakota secretary of state’s office will be sending absentee ballot applications to every registered voter in the state, encouraging them to mail in their ballots for the June 2 primary instead of showing up to polling locations. The primary will come just weeks before Gov. Kristi Noem has predicted virus cases will peak in South Dakota. Physical polling places will still be open, but at least one county auditor says many poll workers are concerned for their safety with the likelihood at least some voters would the same. The Legislature has the power to postpone the election, but some lawmakers don’t think it will be necessary. Nebraska is also sending absentee ballots out to all voters for the same reason, but it’s a redundant exercise in a handful of counties – including Dawes – that already do all their elections by mail. Dawes County Clerk Cheryl Feik says any registered voter in the county can ignore any absentee ballot request form they receive because they’ll be getting their mail-in ballot in about a week. Feik is mailing all of them on Wed, April 22, and says all voters should have them by the end of that week.
