A week ago, the agenda for Tuesday’s Alliance City Council meeting included a contract with a consultant for the search for a new city manager, which began in Sept.
At the meeting, the council instead offered approved a contract with Pecos, Texas, City Manager Seth Sorensen to be the city manager.
Sorensen was the top choice of the council from the first pool of applicants, but said no in December for personal reasons – triggering another round of applications that failed last month when that top choice also said no.
Alliance Mayor Mike Dafney says he’d developed a friendship with Sorensen last fall and had stayed in touch with him, so when the council was looking at hiring the consultant, Dafney texted Sorensen about the job one last time.
Dafney says this time Sorensen was interested and accepted his offer to take it to the council, which offered an unofficial unanimous yes that was made official Tues night.
The mayor thinks Sorensen is a great fit for Alliance, especially given his overall municipal management experience and his time in Pecos, which is similar in size to Alliance.
Dafney says Sorensen’s contract is essentially the same one he was offered last year. He’ll take over in Alliance on June 1st.
