Alpha School Sells For $175,000

The former Alpha School east of Chadron near the Museum of the Fur Trade has sold at auction for $175,000 dollars.

Chadron Public Schools Superintendent Ginger Meyer says a Chadron couple, Douane (Doo-juan) and Mesa Sayaloune, had the winning bid for the school and its 2.6-acre site.

A number of miscellaneous items that the school district had declared surplus such as desks and chairs drew another $580. The proceeds from both the real estate and personal property auctions will go into the school district’s special building fund.

Superintendent Meyer says she feels “pretty good” about the auction, explaining that the building and land had a minimum bid price of $50,000 and she’d been hoping they brought at least $125,000

Alpha School was an independent elementary-only Class 1 school until the Nebraska legislature in 2005 passed a bill requiring those districts to merge with a K-12 district.

Alpha became part of the Chadron district, which operated it for a few years before closing it and the district’s two other former Class 1 schools in 2011.

The concrete block school with brick exterior built in 1950 was then used primarily for storage, but its rural location about 4 miles out of town eventually led to Alpha no longer fitting into the district’s long-term plans.
