Armed Robbery at Chadron Gas Station/Liquor Store; Suspects At Large After Fleeing To Reservation

Chadron police say 2 people, a man and a woman, robbed Cheema’s Gas and Liquor at gunpoint a little after 4:00 Saturday afternoon and fled to the Pine Ridge Reservation, where they remain at large.

Sgt Jarvis Wallage says a quick response resulted in a description of the male suspect and that police have “several very good leads” and are following up on them. He also says that such crimes are “very dangerous to both the public and police.

Wallage says after receiving a 911 call of the robbery in process, officers spotted a pickup eastbound on Bartlett Road just north of Chadron with a driver who matched the description of one of the 2 robbers.

Sgt Wallage says the driver wouldn’t make eye contact when he drove past an officer, then took off onto Slim Buttes Road when Wallage tried to stop him.

Chadron dispatchers notified the Oglala Sioux Tribe Dept of Public Safety while Wallage and the Nebraska State Patrol continued the pursuit to the state line and boundary of the Pine Ridge Reservation.

The pickup passed through a state line checkpoint, but the Nebraska officers had to wait for approval to cross jurisdictions. When they got it, tribal police helped locate the pickup abandoned near a creek bottom on private property.

Sgt Wallage says evidence was seized from the pickup, but officers from multiple jurisdictions were unable to find the suspects, who had fled north.

The Chadron Police Dept is asking the public for any information identifying the 2 suspects or on where they might be. Individuals can call the department at 308-432-0510 or go online to Nebraska Crimestoppers dot com.
