Bill To Limit Early And Mail-In Voting Draws No Positive Testimony

The Nebraska Legislature’s Government, Military and Veterans Affairs Committee held a hearing yesterday on a bill shortening the time window for early and mail-in voting – and no one testified in favor of it.

The bill cuts the window for early voting from the current 35 days for regular elections to the 22 days currently allowed for special elections.

It also bars special interest groups from gathering large numbers of ballots from places like nursing homes and turning them in.

Advocates for voting rights, retirees, and disabled voters argued that the measure runs counter to Nebraska’s decades-long push to expand voter participation

County election officials also opposed the bill, saying it raised concerns that shortening the window would increase their workloads.
