The Oglala Sioux Tribe Dept of Public Safety says a “person of interest” is in custody in connection with the death of 17-year old Shayana Youngman Afraid of His Horses, whose body was found Friday north of Manderson.

A missing alert was issued last Wednesday for Youngman Afraid of His Horses, but she had last been seen on Thursday the 3rd and last heard from on the 5th when her family received a text.

A social media post by the tribe says the death is being investigated as a homicide by both tribal police and the FBI.

Youngman Afraid of His Horses is the second missing woman whose body was found on the Pine Ridge Reservation last week.

The remains of 27-year old Cheryl “Tia” Long Soldier were discovered by searchers on Tuesday. She had been missing since January 4th and her remains were found in the area near Oglala where she’d last been seen.

Authorities have not commented on the case since saying on Wednesday that a cause of death had not been determined and that the case remains under investigation.
