Broken Insulator Triggers Chadron Power Outage

A broken part is blamed for a power outage that affected 842 Nebraska Public Power District customers in Chadron Sunday afternoon.

NPPD Corporate Media and Media Services Supervisor Mark Becker says operators in the utility’s control center in Kearney detected a blown fuse on the transformer of the 10th Street Substation in Chadron at 2:48.

Responding crews quickly found the problem: a broken insulator which caused a switch to break off.

Becker says the outage lasted only a few seconds for many customers, but electricity wasn’t restored to the last customers until 5:36.
